Five new BBC HD channels go live today

The BBC is adding five new high definition television channels to its subscription-free lineup, with Freeview HD, Freesat HD, Sky HD and Virgin Media TiVo boxes receiving the new channels from this afternoon onwards.

CBeebies HD, CBBC HD, BBC News HD, BBC Three HD and BBC Four HD should all be available on Freeview channels 74, 73, 107, 106 and 105, Freesat channels 608, 607, 212, 148 and 147, Sky channels 614, 613, 570, 116 and 115, and Virgin channels 711, 710, 604, 164 and 163. They will all broadcast the same content as their standard definition equivalents, only with a more defined picture.

Some services will automatically update, but others (most likely Freeview HD) will need to rescan their TV or set-top box in order to receive the new channels.

The BBC is using existing HD multiplex for BBC Three and CBBC HD, meaning all UK Freeview HD and YouView customers will be able to enjoy them right away. BBC News HD, BBC Four HD and CBeebies HD will use new HD capacity, which has yet to reach the entire population - if you live in a remote area, you may be stuck waiting until the 2014 Wimbledon tennis Championships, when the extended transmission rollout is due to be completed.

BBC director-general Tony Hall said "I am delighted that we’re able to launch our new HD channels in time for Christmas, when families gather together to enjoy some of the best TV from the BBC. This year, people will be able to watch even more of our programmes in brilliant quality."
